Role of Research and the
Importance of the Searchable Clinical Question (graded)
Research is a
fundamental role that every nurses plays but in different ways. How do you
fulfill the research role now? What trends have created a push for nursing
practice based on evidence?
As you contemplate
your role in the research process, read the assigned Week 1 Case Study and
formulate one searchable, clinical question in the PICO (T) format. There are
several potential questions that could be asked. Identify if the focus of your
question is assessment, etiology, treatment, or prognosis. Remember to
integrate references

Search for Significant Clinical
Issue in a Research Database (graded)
Reflect on your
practice and identify a significant nursing clinical issue that you would like
to search for evidence in online sources. Formulate searchable, clinical
questions in the PICO(T) format for your nursing clinical issue.
Next, review the
guidelines for the Research Database Assignment due Week 3. Use your PICO
elements to search for ONE research database that is relevant to your nursing
clinical issue. Identify the name of the database or data source, its web
address (URL), and briefly describe how it is relevant to your nursing clinical
issue.

Research Problems and
Designs (graded)
The research design
flows from the research question and outlines the plan for the study that will
answer the research question. The design identifies the major components of the
study. It is important to remember that there is no one best design for a
research study. Define qualitative and quantitative research designs.
After you review the
designs, describe which research design you would expect to find when searching
for evidence relevant to your own research question. Why? Explain your answer.
DeVry nr439 week 4 discussion
Ethical and Legal
Issues (graded)
Read one of the
following:
Shepard, A. (2010).
Moral distress: A consequence of caring. Clinical Journal of Oncology Nursing,
Stringer, S. (2013).
Moral choices in end of life care for children. Cancer Nursing Practice, 12(7),
27–32.
Cite the article you
chose. Describe the ways the subjects were vulnerable. Is there any conflict of
interest? Which protections should be put in place to protect these subjects
from harm? What are the incidence and prevalence of moral distress in nursing
today?

Data Collection and
Measurement (graded)
The tools that we use
to collect data need to be reliable and valid. Define these terms with respect
to research and explain why they are important.
Consider data
collection and measure methods as you read the following online or after you
download it.
American Nurses
Association. (2014). Fast facts: The nursing workforce 2014: Growth, salaries,
education, demographics & trends. Retrieved from Review these facts and
describe what the results say about this sample of the nursing workforce. What
do you believe was the intent of the researcher who designed the survey?
DeVry nr439 week 6 discussion
Data Results and
Analysis (graded)
After the data are
collected, it is time to analyze the results! Discuss one of the four basic
rules for understanding results in a research study. Compare clinical
significance and statistical significance. Which one is more meaningful when
considering applying evidence to your practice? Compare descriptive statistics
and inferential statistics in research. Please give an example of each type
that could be collected in a study that would be done on your nursing clinical
issue you identified in previous weeks.
DeVry nr439 week 7 discussion
Applying and Sharing
Evidence (graded) After the data has been analyzed, conclusions are made
regarding what the findings mean. Then, this information must be shared in
order to achieve EBP.
Choose one of the
articles from the RRL assignment and discuss the findings. Would you apply the
evidence found to your practice?
Explain your answer.
Translating research into practice is the final and most important step in the
research process. Review information you found in the Database Assignment, and
explain ways in which you would share the research-based evidence with your
peers.
DeVry nr439 week 8 discussion
Where Do You Go From
Here? (graded)
How has your thinking
changed about nursing research and evidence based practice as the result of
this course? What challenges do you anticipate you will face in implementing
EBP, and how will you overcome these challenges?

years from the CCN Library. Course Outcomes Through this assignment, the
student will demonstrate the ability to meet the following course outcomes:
CO1: Examine the
sources of evidence that contribute to professional nursing practice.
(PO #7) CO2: Apply research
principles to the interpretation of the content of published research studies.
(

published nursing research for credibility and lab significance related to
evidence-based practice.
(POs #4 and 8)
CO5: Recognize the
role of research findings in evidence-based practice.
(POs #7 and 8)
Points
The assignment is
worth a total of 200 points.
Due Date
You are to submit your
paper to the Week 6 Research Article Review Dropbox by Sunday 11:59 p.m. MT at
the end of Week 6.
Requirements
Through this
assignment, the student will:
1. Conduct a systematic search of relevant
databases to find research-based evidence related to a nursing problem (CO 1);
Student is to use the CCN library for search.
2. Critique a peer-reviewed study, indicating the
research question, sample, design of study, data collection method, findings,
and limitations of each (CO 2, CO 4,)
3.
Summarize the research
article and evaluate the significance to nursing. (CO 3).
4.
Please remember this
assignment can be sent to Turnitin Week One draft box for review. If you wait
until late Sunday night to submit, you may not receive your feedback in time if
you need to make changes. Final submission must be in the Week 6 Assignment
Dropbox and student will not receive Turnitin results. Please read the
announcement on the Turnitin information.
5. Article must be from CCN Library and student
is required to document working permalink to article.
Preparing the Paper
Conduct a PICO(T)
search on the nursing problem that you identified in Week 2, Discussion
questions. Select one most recent peer-reviewed study that describes original
research in a single study.
Analyze the article
and provide the following information in brief format: research question the study;
type of sample and number of participants; research design of the study,
findings of the study; and limitations of the study. Summarize the importance
to nursing.
The estimated length
of this paper is four (4) pages, excluding the title page and References page.
Summarize the results of the study as outlined below:
1. Write a brief introduction to your paper,
however do not label it as an “Introduction” in accordance with the rules of
APA scholarly writing.
2.
State the research
question for this study in a paragraph.
3.
Describe the research
design of this study.
4.
Explain how the sample
was selected and include the number of participants. Make a judgment as to
whether the sample size was adequate, and defend your answer why or why not.
5. Describe the data collection method(s)
including who collected data, what tools were used, and other pertinent
information.
6. Identify the limitations of the study, and
describe how the limitations could be overcome in subsequent studies.
7. Describe the findings reported in the study.
What is the answer to the research question based on these findings? If the
study fails to answer the research question, what do you believe is the reason?
8. Summarize the article. Based on these
findings, is the evidence that you found on your topic strong enough to suggest
a change in practice, or an idea for practice? Please provide the rationale for
your answer.
9. List your references, formatted in APA style,
On the References page. Guidelines and a sample paper on APA may be found under
Course Home in the Course Resources link. Follow the guidelines for writing
professional papers using APA formatting as described in the 6th edition of the
manual.
